Crunch into an apple ...

September is peak apple time here in Minnesota so I decided to make a stop at our local Farmer's Market a few blocks from home. I was looking for a brand new variety of apple just out this year called Sweet Tango, but they're too new and I don't think there will be a lot of them available. Instead, I ended up buying a sack of Zestar! apples. Zestar! was introduced in 1999 by University of Minnesota (U of M) research scientists, but it's just starting to show up in markets around the region now. The Zestar! fills a need for a flavorful apple that ripens in August. The most outstanding feature is its sprightly, sweet-tart taste -- with a hint of brown sugar. It's a super juicy apple with a light, crisp texture. I was told they're good for baking, too! If you come across them anywhere, I hope you'll give them a try. I guarantee you won't be sorry!

  1. I'll keep this in mind. Zestar! The exclamation point is something else - I mean, someone had to say, "No, I'm naming it Zestar! With the exclamation point. Yes, include it in the name."
